“”Brad you came. You’re so sweet,” I said, noticing the stir Brad Pitt’s presence was creating among the nurses. “I can’t believe you came”
“Of course I came. You’re having surgery, for God’s sake,” he responded, then kissed me softly on the lips. Wow, that was a first. And not bad either.
“But what about Jennifer?” I asked, feeling like the other woman, more than a little embarrassed that this conversation was happening in pubic.
“That was a mistake, Fran,” he replied. Then leaning over, he whispered in my ear, “I love you.”
“Oh, Brad, are you sure? Do you realize I have cancer?” I asked.
Fearlessly and eloquently, he responded, “Cancer schmancer!”
Boy, if only life were like movies…”
– Fran Drescher, “Cancer Schmancer”
I received the book “Cancer Schmancer” written by Fran Drescher for my birthday and I got very emotional. My Mum had written a little note on the front page of the book. I was very eager to start reading it so I started it that night. I’ve admired Fran Drescher for a while now and really wanted to read about her journey dealing with cancer and turning pain into purpose.
In 2000, Fran got diagnosed with uterine cancer. During the two years prior to her diagnosis, she had been feeling unwell. It took 8 doctors before she was able to get the diagnosis. She then decided to write a book about her experience so that it wouldn’t happen to others.
I was so absorbed and interested by what I was reading that I had to force myself to put the book down to get some sleep. And within three days, I had finished the book. I have NEVER read a book this quickly. It’s a very easy and enjoyable read. I cried, I smiled, I laughed, I felt compassion. Basically, I was moved by the story-telling.
I am proud to admire such a strong woman.
Reading “Cancer Schmancer” has allowed me to be more aware and informed as a person regarding misdiagnosis. If you believe your doctor isn’t giving you the correct diagnosis or treatment, you must mention it. Nobody can know your body better than you can. We need to become medical consumers. If you think you need a particular test to be done that isn’t suggested to you, ask for it ! Some tests take 2 minutes and are a life saver. The earlier we detect cancer, the earlier we can cure it. We need to listen to our bodies!!
Without a doubt, I absolutely recommend reading this book.
